[Easy Science] Exosomes: The Next Generation of Drug Delivery Vehicles with Vast Potential in Diagnostics, Cosmetics, and Beyond

SEOUL (Yonhap) — Reporter Cho Hyun-young — As new types of medicines emerge, drug delivery technologies are also advancing to ensure that therapeutic agents reach their intended targets with greater precision.
Among these technologies, exosomes, naturally occurring delivery vehicles derived from cells, are attracting growing attention.
Exosomes are a type of extracellular vesicle (EV) secreted by cells and typically measure about 50–150 nanometers in diameter.
Most cells in the human body are known to release exosomes, which can also be found in bodily fluids such as saliva and urine.
These vesicles contain nucleic acids, proteins, lipids, and other components similar to those of the cells from which they originate. When taken up by other cells, exosomes release their molecular cargo, transmitting information from their source cells and facilitating cell-to-cell communication.
This property makes exosomes promising drug delivery vehicles. By loading them with therapeutic drugs or proteins, researchers may be able to achieve stronger treatment effects. Because exosomes have structures similar to cell membranes, they can move efficiently through biological tissues and deliver therapeutic cargo more precisely to target cells.
For example, a therapeutic agent designed to inhibit BACE-1, a protein associated with the development of Alzheimer’s disease, can be loaded into exosomes and administered into the body. The exosomes may then travel to neuronal cells in the brain associated with BACE-1 activity and suppress its expression.
Beyond their role as drug delivery vehicles, exosomes are also being studied for disease diagnosis, through the detection of specific biomolecules contained within them, as well as for applications in the cosmetics industry.
