Konkuk University Holdings Subsidiary to Develop Therapeutics Using Stem Cell and Exosome Technologies

[ZDNET Korea] Konkuk University announced on the 16th that StemExOne, a subsidiary of Konkuk University Holdings led by Ssang-Goo Cho, Professor in the Department of Stem Cell and Regenerative Biotechnology, has been selected for the Ministry of SMEs and Startups’ 2022 TIPS (Tech Incubator Program for Startup).

StemExOne was selected for its project titled “Development of Therapeutics for Intractable Diseases Using High-Efficiency, High-Functionality Mass Production Technology for Stem Cell-Derived Exosomes.”

TIPS is a private investment-led startup support program established by the Ministry of SMEs and Startups to foster early-stage technology startups. Under the program, private investors identify promising startups and make initial investments, while the government provides up to KRW 900 million in support, including R&D and commercialization funding.

Founded in July 2020, StemExOne specializes in developing therapeutics based on stem cell and exosome technologies. It is also the 11th subsidiary of Konkuk University Holdings, which was established by Konkuk University in 2013 to accelerate the commercialization of promising university-owned technologies.

Through the TIPS program, StemExOne plans to begin with the development of exosome therapeutics for refractory inflammatory diseases for which effective treatments remain limited, and subsequently expand into treatments for sepsis, refractory wounds, and osteoarthritis, as well as functional cosmetic ingredients.

Ssang-Goo Cho, CEO of StemExOne, said, “Our selection for the program will further accelerate the development of manufacturing processes and safety evaluation for standardized and homogeneous exosome therapeutics. We will continue working toward successful research, development, and production of exosome-based therapeutics.”
