[2023 Outstanding Patent Awards] StemExOne

StemExOne, led by CEO Ssang-Goo Cho, has developed a technology for the large-scale production of exosomes by establishing a three-dimensional culture environment for highly functional umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal stem cells (UC-MSCs) and optimizing key signaling factors with strong capabilities for regulating hydrodynamic shear stress.

The technology enables the efficient production of exosomes as high-value functional biomaterials. StemExOne has also filed patent applications in major overseas markets, including the United States, Europe, China, Japan, and Australia, as part of its global expansion strategy.

In particular, T-a3D-EVs, three-dimensional stem cell-derived extracellular vesicles produced using this technology, demonstrated strong therapeutic efficacy in refractory inflammatory diseases. The company’s first pipeline, targeting interstitial cystitis, has shown promising results that have been reported in leading international scientific journals.

StemExOne has also secured a broad portfolio of core technologies, including cell-enhancement technology, methods for differentiating mesenchymal stem cells from pluripotent stem cells, technologies for the production and application of exosomes derived from human tissues, treatments for inflammatory diseases using exosomes from umbilical cord- or salivary gland-derived stem cells, and exosome technologies for improving skin conditions in companion animals.

More recently, the company has developed technologies designed to address key challenges in exosome commercialization, including large-scale production and heterogeneity, and is continuing research toward commercial application.
