Next Comes the Age of Artificial Life… AI Begins Designing Proteins

 

What comes after AI systems such as AlphaFold 3 become capable of accurately predicting protein structures and molecular interactions? Some scientists believe the next stage will be an era in which AI moves beyond prediction and begins to design proteins itself, potentially opening the door to what has been described as an age of “artificial life.”

The idea is to combine AI’s ability to understand protein structures with approaches similar to reverse engineering, in which a finished product is analyzed to uncover how it was designed and how it works. Applied to biology, this could enable researchers to design proteins with specific functions.

Such technologies could make it possible to produce large quantities of synthetic proteins at lower cost for use in biopharmaceuticals. In practical terms, AI could be used to design artificial proteins for medicines and vaccines targeting diseases such as cancer and influenza.

Prof. Cho Byung-kwan of KAIST said, “The development of synthetic biology, which involves designing and engineering genes, proteins, and other biological components, is likely to accelerate.”

Some researchers also believe humanity is approaching a point where it will move beyond merely reading biological systems to actively writing them. AI could eventually be used to engineer viruses, microorganisms, and other biological systems.

The development of synthetic viruses in particular is expected to accelerate, raising concerns about potential misuse. Because such technologies could theoretically be exploited to create harmful biological agents, researchers are increasingly emphasizing the need for strong safeguards and responsible development.

In March, scientists from around the world working in biology, artificial intelligence, and related fields issued a joint statement calling for responsible AI-enabled protein design. The statement urged researchers to avoid work that could cause harm or create significant risks of misuse. Within a month, the number of scientists supporting the initiative had grown to 164.
